The central government has announced road infrastructure projects worth Rs 1.30 lakh crore across Uttarakhand, with several major corridors near Dehradun scheduled for completion in 2026. Union Minister Nitin Gadkari outlined the scale of the plan in April 2026, noting that projects worth Rs 25,000 crore have already been completed, Rs 35,000 crore worth of work is underway, and upcoming projects valued at Rs 80,000 crore are in pipeline. The Uttarakhand road projects 2026 form the most ambitious road investment the state has seen since the Char Dham All-Weather Road project began.
Projects Near Dehradun Completing in 2026
The most immediate impact for Dehradun residents comes from two projects due this year. The four-lane Paonta Sahib-Dehradun link road, valued at Rs 1,650 crore, is expected to become operational in May 2026. This road connects Dehradun to Paonta Sahib in Himachal Pradesh via a faster, wider corridor than the current route, cutting travel time and reducing the load on existing approach roads into the city.
The 51-kilometre six-lane stretch from the Saharanpur bypass to Haridwar is scheduled to open in June 2026. This project, part of the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway system, will ease the final approach into Uttarakhand from the expressway and smooth traffic into Haridwar, the main gateway city for Char Dham pilgrims and Dehradun-bound travellers.
The Haridwar Bypass and Rishikesh Connector
The four-lane Haridwar greenfield bypass (Phase 1), valued at Rs 1,600 crore, has a target completion date of October 2026. This project will allow through-traffic to bypass Haridwar city rather than passing through it, which currently causes severe congestion especially during pilgrim seasons. The Rishikesh bypass project is scheduled to begin construction in August 2026.
For the longer term, Uttarakhand’s road plan also includes a 21-kilometre four-lane bypass for Rudrapur (Rs 1,050 crore, likely complete by October 2026) and a 15-kilometre bypass for Kashipur (Rs 936 crore, December 2026 target). These projects primarily serve the Terai industrial belt rather than Dehradun directly, but they improve freight movement across the state.
235 Bridges Across the State
Alongside road projects, the state is upgrading 235 bridges at a combined cost of Rs 1,640 crore. Many of these bridges are on routes connecting hill districts to Dehradun and the Char Dham network. The bridge upgrades are also listed as having strategic defence readiness value, as strengthened routes improve access for heavy military equipment in border-adjacent districts. Char Dham All-Weather Road Progress
The Char Dham All-Weather Road project, which aims to widen and improve road links to all four major pilgrimage sites in Uttarakhand, continues in parallel with the 2026 road plan. The project has faced delays due to terrain, weather, and litigation over road widths in ecologically sensitive areas. The prioritisation of this project in the 2026 governance roadmap means faster clearances and increased fund releases are expected this year.
What This Means for Dehradun
Multiple improved access routes into and out of Dehradun mean the city is becoming more connected to the national highway network from multiple directions. The Paonta Sahib link adds a northwestern access route from Himachal. The Saharanpur-Haridwar stretch completes the expressway network from the south. Combined with the already-open Delhi-Dehradun Expressway, Dehradun will have faster connections to Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, and eventually to the Char Dham shrines than at any point in its history.
The increased connectivity also increases the burden on Dehradun’s internal road network. The city’s ring road and key arterial routes like Haridwar Road and Saharanpur Road will see higher vehicle volumes. The Uttarakhand Public Works Department has earmarked Rs 12,000 crore for urban transport infrastructure, with projects in the Rispana-Bindal region aimed at reducing pressure on the city core.
