The Uttarakhand Census 2026 house-listing phase began on April 25 across the state, including Dehradun, and will run for 30 days through May 24. Governor Lt Gen (Retd) Gurmeet Singh launched the exercise with a self-enumeration on April 10, kicking off Uttarakhand’s first digital-first census.

House-listing is the first of two phases. Enumerators will visit every household in Dehradun to record building details, amenities, and basic occupant data. The second phase, population enumeration, will run early in 2027.

What enumerators will ask during Uttarakhand Census 2026

The questionnaire has two parts. The house-listing form covers building condition, ownership status, predominant material of walls and roof, water source, electricity, sanitation, fuel type, and number of rooms. The second part records basic socioeconomic markers, including assets like television, refrigerator, mobile phone, and vehicle ownership.

Enumerators carry a tablet pre-loaded with the digital form. Each household visit takes 15 to 25 minutes. You do not need to provide any document during this phase, though enumerators will note your Aadhaar number if you choose to share it.

Self-enumeration is now an option

For the first time, residents can fill the form themselves through the official census portal. Self-enumeration suits busy households, gated apartment communities, and people who travel frequently. The portal will be active through the full 30 day window.

How to verify a real census enumerator

Every enumerator carries a government-issued ID card with photo, designation, and the census operations seal. They also carry an authorisation letter signed by the District Census Officer. If you have any doubt, ask for the ID. A genuine enumerator never asks for money, bank details, or OTPs.

Scammers have been known to pose as census staff in past surveys. The Uttarakhand Police have warned residents to call 112 if anyone asks for payment in the name of the census. Real enumerators ask questions, not money.

Why the census data matters for Dehradun

House-listing data drives core public planning. Schools, water lines, electricity load planning, road widening, and even the next round of MDDA housing schemes use census numbers as the base. Inaccurate or incomplete data means worse public services for the next decade.

Dehradun’s official population in the 2011 census was 5.78 lakh in the city limits and 16.96 lakh in the district. The 2026 round is expected to show district population near 22 lakh, given the inflow from Delhi NCR over the past three years. The new Delhi Dehradun Expressway is one major driver.

What you should do this week

If your home falls within the 30 day window, expect a knock between 9 AM and 6 PM. Have a rough headcount of household members ready, plus knowledge of your home’s water and power connection details. Keep a pen and paper handy, the digital form lets you save and resume.

For the official portal and FAQ, visit the Uttarakhand state portal. Census operation updates are published on the Census India site. Both update each Tuesday during the field exercise.

Take the time to answer carefully. Census data shapes the city you and your children will live in for the next 10 years.
