A 12-kilometre Dehradun bypass under construction by NHAI is 44% complete and on track for delivery by April 2027. The Dehradun bypass NHAI 2026 project carries a total outlay of Rs 716 crore and is being built as a four-lane greenfield access-controlled corridor on the city’s south-western edge.
The Dehradun bypass NHAI 2026 route connects Jhajhra to the Paonta Sahib-Ballupur section of NH-7 and terminates near the Asharori Check Post, where it links directly to the newly opened Delhi-Dehradun Economic Corridor.
What the Dehradun Bypass NHAI Project Will Do for the City
The corridor is designed to pull heavy freight, inter-state trucks, and through traffic away from Dehradun’s congested urban roads. Right now, vehicles heading between Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, and Punjab pass through the heart of Dehradun, adding to daily gridlock on Clock Tower Road, Rajpur Road, and key intersections near the ISBT.
Once complete, those vehicles will bypass the city entirely. The route connects to Selaqui’s industrial zone, Vikasnagar, Herbertpur, and onward to Paonta Sahib in Himachal Pradesh, creating a seamless corridor for freight from the plains to the hills.
Wildlife and Environment Provisions
The bypass corridor passes through areas with significant wildlife movement. NHAI has incorporated underpasses and culverts at regular intervals to allow safe passage for animals. The alignment was adjusted during the planning phase to minimise forest clearance.
According to a statement by NHAI, environmental safeguards including dust suppression systems and drainage management structures are already operational at active construction zones along the alignment.
Timeline and Current Status
Work began in 2024 after land acquisition and environmental clearances were completed. As of April 2026, 44% of the total work is structurally complete, with earthwork and foundation work underway across the remaining sections.
The full bypass is expected to open by April 2027. NHAI has flagged it as a priority project under the Bharatmala national road development programme, which means it receives regular budgetary support and close central monitoring.
Once the bypass opens, daily commuters inside Dehradun stand to benefit the most. The removal of freight traffic from city roads will cut travel times on key arteries and reduce air pollution from diesel vehicles idling in traffic.
