The Char Dham Yatra 2026 has begun, and Dehradun is the staging point for thousands of pilgrims heading to Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath. Yamunotri and Gangotri opened on April 19 on Akshaya Tritiya, Kedarnath welcomed pilgrims from April 22, and Badrinath opened its doors on April 23. The Uttarakhand government expects over 50 lakh pilgrims through the yatra season this year.
If you are starting from Dehradun, the doon valley sits at a useful crossroads for both the Garhwal shrines and the Delhi outflow on the Delhi Dehradun Expressway. The standard pilgrim circuit takes nine to ten days at a steady pace, with the option of a helicopter shuttle to Kedarnath for travellers short on time.

How To Register For The Char Dham Yatra 2026
Online registration is open and is required for entry to all four shrines and most check posts on the route. Carry the printed slip with your photo identity at every barrier.
- Open the official Uttarakhand Tourism registration portal.
- Choose the dham, the date of darshan and the number of pilgrims in your group.
- Upload one photo identity per pilgrim, such as Aadhaar, voter ID or passport.
- Enter the mobile number you will carry on the trip, since OTPs are sent at multiple check posts.
- Download the QR coded slip and keep two printouts in your travel kit.
Helicopter tickets to Kedarnath from Sersi, Phata and Guptkashi pads are sold only through the IRCTC heli yatra portal. Do not pay private agents for helicopter slots, since unauthorised tickets are routinely turned away at the helipad.
Health And Packing Notes
Kedarnath sits at 3,583 metres and Badrinath at 3,133 metres, so altitude sickness is a real concern for travellers from low altitude cities. Carry a basic altitude sickness kit with paracetamol, ORS, motion sickness tablets, and a doctor prescribed acetazolamide course if you have a history of breathlessness. Pack thermal layers since night temperatures stay near zero in April and early May.
What This Means For Dehradun Hotels And Traffic
Dehradun hotels in Saharanpur Chowk, Prince Chowk and the ISBT belt are running near full occupancy on weekends. Traffic on the Rishikesh bypass is heaviest between 4 am and 8 am as yatra buses leave for Barkot and Sonprayag. If you live near these routes, plan school drops and office runs around the early window or after 9 am.
