The Char Dham cyber fraud wave hitting pilgrims this season has triggered the largest online crackdown of the year. The Uttarakhand Special Task Force has blocked 180 fake social media links, shut 10 fraudulent booking websites, and filed three FIRs since April 1. Targets include fake helicopter booking pages, dummy lodging operators, and impersonator travel agents.

Officials say the scale is bigger than 2025. Senior STF officer Ashish Kumar Chauhan issued a public warning on April 25, asking pilgrims to use only the state’s official portal. Scammers have copied page layouts from genuine state websites, used near-identical domain names, and run paid ads on search engines to reach pilgrims first.

How the Char Dham cyber fraud schemes work

Most attacks fall into three patterns. The first is fake helicopter booking. Scam sites collect Rs 8,000 to Rs 15,000 per booking, then disappear. The second is fraudulent registration help. Sites charge a fee to do free registration on your behalf, then either fail to register you at all or sell your data. The third is impersonator travel agents who offer combo packages and vanish after taking advance payment.

The Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre, under the Union Home Ministry, issued an official advisory in early April. The centre flagged paid search ads as the leading channel for fake bookings. Always check the URL before paying.

What real registration looks like

The official URL is registrationandtouristcare.uk.gov.in. The site asks for your name, ID number, contact, and travel dates. It does not ask for advance payment. If you see a payment page after entering basic details, the site is fake.

How to spot a fake site

Look for four warning signs. A misspelled domain like uk-charrdham or uttrakhand-yatra. A request for advance payment for free services like registration. A WhatsApp number with no government domain link. And a page demanding your full bank details for a small booking fee.

Real helicopter operators are listed on the Uttarakhand Civil Aviation Development Authority page. Genuine state services use uk.gov.in domains. Anything else needs deeper checking.

What to do if you have been scammed

Call 1930 within 24 hours of the transaction. This is the National Cybercrime Helpline. The faster you call, the better the chance of freezing the fraudulent payment before it leaves your bank. Also file a written complaint at cybercrime.gov.in and contact your bank immediately to flag the transaction.

Save screenshots of the fake site, payment confirmation, and any chat history. These are needed evidence for the FIR.

Dehradun residents play a role

If you run a hotel, taxi service, or tour shop in Dehradun, share verified booking links with your guests. Many fraud cases start when a tourist asks a local for help and gets sent to a search-engine ad. For ongoing safety guidance, follow the Hellodoon city news desk.

The Yatra season runs through October. Stay alert through every booking step. Ask twice before you pay once.
