The Delhi-Dehradun Expressway opened on April 14, 2026, after years of construction. Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the 210-kilometre six-lane access-controlled corridor that now connects the national capital to Dehradun in approximately 2.5 hours, down from nearly six hours on the older route. The Delhi Dehradun Expressway is the most significant road infrastructure change for this city in decades.
What the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway Covers
The expressway runs 210 kilometres across three states: Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and Uttarakhand. It is a six-lane access-controlled highway built at an estimated cost of over Rs 12,000 crore. The route connects Delhi to Dehradun through a path that bypasses many of the congested stretches that made the older NH-58 journey so slow.
One of the most noted engineering features on this corridor is the 12-kilometre elevated wildlife passage over Rajaji National Park, which is one of the longest elevated wildlife corridors in Asia. The structure keeps vehicle traffic above the forest canopy, allowing animals to move freely beneath it without road interference.
Travel Time and Toll Details
Before this expressway, the drive from Delhi to Dehradun on the old route took between five and six hours under normal traffic conditions. The new corridor cuts that to 2.5 hours. For residents of Dehradun who travel to Delhi for work, medical appointments, or family visits, this change is significant.
The expressway includes an Advanced Traffic Management System with cameras, sensors, and variable message signs along the route. Multiple wayside facilities with fuel, food, and rest areas are located at intervals along the corridor.
Toll details were being finalised at the time of inauguration. Travellers should check the National Highways Authority of India website for current toll rates before travelling. FASTag payment is mandatory across the route.
What Changes for Dehradun
The opening of the expressway is already changing Dehradun’s economic profile. Property consultants and developers have noted a spike in inquiries for land and second homes on the outskirts of the city, particularly along Rajpur Road and in the Mussoorie foothills. Faster access from Delhi means weekend tourism to Dehradun and surrounding hill stations is expected to rise.
City planners have noted that the higher inflow of visitors will also test Dehradun’s existing infrastructure. Roads inside the city, parking capacity at tourist points, and the Mussoorie cable car corridor are areas that may see stress as weekend footfall increases.

Additional Road Projects Coming
The Delhi-Dehradun Expressway is part of a larger Rs 1.30 lakh crore road investment the Centre has announced for Uttarakhand. A 51-kilometre six-lane stretch from the Saharanpur bypass to Haridwar is scheduled to open in June 2026. The four-lane Paonta Sahib-Dehradun link is set to become operational in May 2026, adding another option for travellers entering Dehradun from Himachal Pradesh.
What Happens Next
The expressway is fully operational as of April 14, 2026. Residents planning their first drive on the new route should check whether the full 210-kilometre stretch is open from their intended entry point, as some access ramps were in final commissioning stages at inauguration. For Dehradun residents, the fastest access point is likely the Dehradun end near Haridwar bypass. Travel on the older route through Meerut and Muzaffarnagar remains an option for those without FASTag or who need to stop at intermediate towns not served by the expressway.
