Outdoor nature spot to visit in Dehradun during summer 2026

Summer in Dehradun 2026 started early. By mid-April, temperatures in the city were touching 36 to 38 degrees Celsius during the afternoon, with the India Meteorological Department forecasting highs near 40 degrees in the last week of April. For residents and visitors, the city is entering its warmest season, but summer Dehradun 2026 also means access to some of the best outdoor experiences in the Doon Valley before the monsoon arrives in late June.

Weather in Dehradun This Summer

April and May are the hottest months in Dehradun. The IMD office in Dehradun issued forecasts showing temperatures between 37 and 40 degrees Celsius through the last week of April, with relative humidity around 35 to 40 percent. Pre-monsoon thunderstorms are expected to bring brief relief in the evenings from late April onward. The city’s elevation at 447 metres above sea level provides some buffer against the extreme heat seen in the plains, but afternoons are uncomfortable without shade or air conditioning.

June typically brings the transition to monsoon conditions, with cooler temperatures but high humidity and heavy rain. The window from now through late May is the best time to do outdoor activities before the monsoon turns trails slippery and some roads temporarily impassable. For updated forecasts, the IMD Dehradun office publishes daily weather reports.

Best Places to Visit in and Around Dehradun This Summer

Robber’s Cave (Guchhupani) is one of the most popular spots in the summer months for good reason. The 600-metre limestone cave has a stream running through it and the water inside stays noticeably cool even on the hottest days. The cave is about 8 kilometres from the city centre and entry costs Rs 25 per person. Arrive before 10 AM to avoid the midday rush.

Sahastradhara is another summer favourite. The sulphur springs here have a cooling effect on the surrounding environment, and the terraced rock pools below the falls are accessible for wading. The site is 14 kilometres northeast of Dehradun city and has a ropeway for a view of the valley. The Joy Land Water Park at Sahastradhara is open through the summer season for families with children.

The Forest Research Institute campus is one of the finest examples of colonial-era architecture in North India and its wide grounds provide shade and calm in contrast to the city’s busy roads. Six forestry museums are inside the main building. Entry is nominal. The campus is best visited in the early morning when temperatures are manageable and the grounds are quieter.

Day Trips from Dehradun

Mussoorie, at 2,005 metres, is the most accessible hill escape from Dehradun and takes about an hour by car from the city. Temperatures in Mussoorie during summer are typically 10 to 15 degrees cooler than Dehradun, making it a genuine escape from the valley heat. The Mall Road and Kempty Falls are the two most-visited spots. Weekends are crowded; a weekday visit is far more comfortable.

Landour, just above Mussoorie, is quieter and higher, with excellent views of the Himalayan range on clear mornings. The famous Char Dukan (Four Shops) area in Landour is a popular stop for its atmosphere and basic refreshments. The road to Landour from Mussoorie is narrow; leave your car at Mussoorie and walk or hire a local taxi for the final stretch.

For a longer day trip, Chakrata at 2,118 metres offers dense deodar forest, a quieter atmosphere than Mussoorie, and good trekking around Tiger Falls. Chakrata is 88 kilometres from Dehradun and takes about two and a half hours by road. For more day trip suggestions and travel routes from Dehradun, see the Hello Doon travel section.

What to Keep in Mind

The expressway inauguration in April is already increasing the volume of tourists arriving in Dehradun from Delhi on weekends. Popular spots like Robber’s Cave and the Mussoorie Mall Road are likely to be more crowded this summer than in previous years. Early morning visits, weekday planning, and arriving before 9 AM at popular sites are the most effective ways to avoid peak congestion.

Water availability at outdoor sites is limited. Carry your own water and sunscreen. ATMs are available on Mall Road Mussoorie and in central Dehradun but are sometimes out of cash at popular spots on weekends. Digital payments work well at most commercial establishments in both cities.
