IIT Roorkee vs Graphic Era University is a comparison most Uttarakhand parents have heard, mostly framed badly. Both are in the state, both run engineering programmes, and both rank well on the surface. The honest answer is that they sit in different leagues, attract different students, and lead to different careers. This piece lays out the numbers, the trade-offs, and what kind of candidate each campus suits.

Rankings: where they stand

IIT Roorkee is ranked 6th in Engineering by NIRF 2025 and 7th overall, with a position around 141 in the QS World University Rankings 2026 for engineering and technology. Graphic Era Deemed-to-be University ranks 48th in the NIRF University category and 72nd overall in 2025. The gap is wide. IIT Roorkee competes nationally with the older IITs and the IISc, and Graphic Era competes regionally with private universities like Lovely Professional and Manipal. Shiksha’s IIT Roorkee profile tracks the historical ranking trend.

Two of Uttarakhand’s best-known engineering campuses, with sharply different positioning.

Fees and total cost

IIT Roorkee BTech costs roughly Rs.8 to Rs.10.7 lakh in tuition over four years, with hostel and mess running another Rs.1.4 to Rs.1.8 lakh per year. The total comes to around Rs.14 to Rs.18 lakh for a four-year programme. Graphic Era University BTech is around Rs.1.5 to Rs.2 lakh per year for tuition depending on the branch, plus around Rs.1.2 lakh for hostel. The four-year total works out to Rs.10 to Rs.14 lakh. Graphic Era is cheaper on absolute numbers, but IIT Roorkee subsidies and scholarships compress the gap for families with combined income under Rs.5 lakh annually.

Admission process: the real filter

IIT Roorkee admits BTech students through JEE Advanced. To sit for JEE Advanced you have to clear JEE Main with a top-2.5-lakh rank, then qualify the Advanced exam, then secure a rank low enough to claim a Roorkee branch. CSE at IIT Roorkee closes around AIR 700 in the general category. Graphic Era University admits through JEE Main scores or its own GEEE entrance, with a 75% Class 12 cutoff in PCM. The Graphic Era barrier is meaningful but it is not the same exam funnel. IIT Roorkee filters around 0.05% of all engineering aspirants. Graphic Era admits a far broader band of students from Uttarakhand and the surrounding states.

IIT Roorkee vs Graphic Era placement packages comparison
The placement gap is the most telling difference between the two.

Placements: the honest numbers

For the 2025 batch, IIT Roorkee BTech graduates posted a median package of around Rs.17 to Rs.22.5 LPA. CSE specifically averaged Rs.34 LPA, with a placement rate above 99%. Top recruiters include Google, Microsoft, Oracle, Goldman Sachs, Intel, ISRO, and DRDO. Graphic Era University reported a median BTech package of Rs.7.25 LPA for the same year, with the highest single offer at Rs.61.99 LPA from Google for a CSE student. Recruiters at GEU include Adobe, Amazon, and a long list of mid-tier IT services firms. The Rs.61.99 LPA headline number is real but is a single outlier. The realistic central case for a Graphic Era CSE graduate is Rs.6 to Rs.10 LPA. Campus Utra’s Graphic Era placement breakdown has a year-on-year table.

What the campuses are like

IIT Roorkee’s campus is 365 acres in Roorkee town, about 70 kilometres from Dehradun. It is residential, formal, and academically intense. Students attend research-driven labs, work with PhD-led faculty, and have access to international exchange programmes with universities like ETH Zurich and the National University of Singapore. Graphic Era’s main campus is in Dehradun on Bell Road, with a second campus in Bhimtal. The teaching model is closer to a tier-2 private engineering school: large class sizes, industry-aligned curriculum, and a heavy focus on placement preparation. Roorkee gives you an academic experience. Graphic Era gives you a job pipeline.

Fees split the universe of applicants but the placement numbers split it again.

Which campus fits which student

IIT Roorkee fits the student who has already cleared JEE Advanced or is realistically tracking toward a sub-2000 rank. If you want to do core engineering research, build deep technical skills, or aim at top-tier global companies and graduate school, this is the right place. Graphic Era fits the student with a strong but not JEE-Advanced profile, who wants to live in or near Dehradun, and whose primary goal is a corporate IT or engineering services job within four years of starting the degree. It is also a good landing spot for students whose families want a known regional brand without the pressure of an IIT cohort.

The verdict

IIT Roorkee vs Graphic Era is not a choice between two equivalents. It is a choice between two different career paths. If you have the rank, take Roorkee. The placement, network, and academic ceiling are at a different level. If you do not have the rank but want to stay in Uttarakhand and start a corporate IT career, Graphic Era is the strongest option in the state.
